Learn How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. Several foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are fantastic at battling depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you want to feel happier. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel better. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods too!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a few of these hints instead.
