Use Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very healthy and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, can improve your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try consuming a couple of eggs to feel better!
Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.
If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping raise your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can help your mood elevate as it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!
So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
