Discover How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to consume. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out some of these.
Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at fighting depression. You need to be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel better!
Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.
If you want to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
Some grains are actually excellent for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. It’s easy to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!
As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
