How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be super nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and jolly up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.

If you would like to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping raise your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be better. Now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
