Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to avoid them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to eat. Several foods honestly do raise your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Eat a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel happier. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. They help you feel full too which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel hungry! These grains can improve your mood because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. Now you know it can help you be happier as well!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you just so to feel better! Try some of these instead!
